Bowie State Football Continues Commitment in Community, Volunteers at Deaf Fest Festival

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: Members of the Bowie State football team volunteered at the new and revamped Deaf Fest at Dorothy I. Height Elementary on Friday, Apr. 28 hosted by the Baltimore City Public Schools.

“Being able to give back to the community in general is always great, but giving back to this particular community is even better,” said Defensive Back Coach Rod White. “It allowed the guys to learn new things but also help them to not take things for granted.”

The festival served as an opportunity for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, district wide, to showcase their culture and pride in order to bring awareness to others. The Bulldogs helped celebrate the students and their families while emphasizing that no matter the differences the message was clear that all can still work together.

The day featured a variety of events from guest speakers to activities and exercises. The BSU football student-athletes oversaw activities and exercises while the students ran and danced around with big smiles throughout the duration. Additionally, staff members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program took time to teach the Bulldogs American Sign Language.
