EMILY’s List endorses Angela Alsobrooks in crowded Maryland Senate primary

POLITICO: The Democratic group EMILY’s List endorsed Angela Alsobrooks for the Maryland Senate race on Thursday, offering the Prince George’s County executive an early boost in what is expected to be a competitive primary to replace the retiring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD).

The pro-abortion rights political action committee lauded Alsobrooks as a “proven leader” based on her tenure in local government, according to the statement obtained by Politico. The endorsement gives the Maryland Democrat a key advantage as she faces a crowded field of competitors that is only expected to grow larger over the coming months.

“[Alsobrooks] is a fierce fighter for women, children, and families who will not back down in the face of adversity or tolerate extremist politicians placing themselves between patients and their doctors,” the statement reads.

Alsobrooks launched her Senate bid for the solidly Democratic seat on Tuesday. She will face at least two challengers: Rep. David Trone (D-MD) and Montgomery County Councilman Will Jawando, who announced their campaigns earlier this month.View Apartments from Home - View Apartments Near You

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said he is also considering a Senate bid, although he told reporters he would not make a decision until the end of May. Should Raskin enter the race, he would benefit from the name recognition he earned as the manager for former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment in 2021 and his role on the Jan. 6 committee in the last Congress.

A Senate bid for Raskin would also position him for a rematch against Trone. Raskin previously defeated him in the Democratic primary for his current House seat in 2016.

Meanwhile, the bench for competitive Republican Senate candidates is short in the heavily blue state. GOP leaders sought to convince former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to run for the seat, but he ruled out a bid earlier this month.
