Prince George’s Firefighters Union Sound Alarm Once More on Overtime Frustrations

FOX BALTIMORE: The union representing Firefighters in Prince George’s County said it’s again calling for a reprieve for crews, claiming over 1,000 instances of mandatory overtime in the past two months.

Amidst an ongoing staff shortage, Prince George’s County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Association (IAFF Local 1619) said crews have been forced to work a total of roughly 12,800 hours of mandatory callbacks across 1,068 instances between August and September.

“Our Fire Fighters have waited patiently for their relief, only to see none come,” the group said in a social media post.

The group said last year, County firefighters reported 40,000 hours of mandatory overtime.

It’s been an ongoing issue within Prince George’s County for the last several years, with leaders recently offering tax incentives in hopes of recruiting more police officers and firefighters from places as far as Puerto Rico.
