Mayor Bowser Expected to Name Nina Albert as Next Economic Development Chief

WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL: The expected appointee is leaving a federal post on Friday.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is expected to name soon-to-be former General Services Administration official Nina Albert as the District’s next deputy mayor for planning and economic development.

Longtime D.C. journalist Tom Sherwood on Thursday night reported Albert’s appointment on X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter.

I’ve reached out to Bowser’s office for comment and will update this post when I hear back.

It was announced earlier this week that Albert’s last day as commissioner of the Public Buildings Service, the GSA’s unit in charge of all federal real estate, would be Friday. Her name had swirled in rumors as the next DMPED for the last 48 hours.

Albert joined the GSA in July 2021 after a five-year stint as director of real estate for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the agency that runs Metro. She previously worked in public affairs and government relations with Baltimore’s Sagamore Development Co. and Walmart, during the retail giant’s initial D.C. expansion, and with D.C.’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and Department of the Environment. With DMPED from 2006 to 2010, Albert oversaw the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, a program that ultimately led to the development of The Wharf on the Southwest waterfront.

Albert will be stepping into the economic development and planning post about seven months after John Falcicchio resigned amid sexual harassment allegations. Two separate investigationsfrom the Mayor’s Office of Legal Counsel into Falcicchio’s conduct found he made unwanted sexual advances toward D.C. employees.

Keith Anderson has been filling the deputy mayor role on an interim basis since Falcicchio’s resignation in March.
