Women’s Volleyball Set to Host Virginia University Lynchburg Tuesday for 2023 Home Opener

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: Home sweet home. The Bowie State women’s volleyball team will open its slate of 2023 home matches beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 12 inside McKeldin Gymnasium when the Bulldogs welcome the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg at 6:30 p.m. Bowie State will look to win its home opener for the second-straight season and first win of the 2023 season.

The Bulldogs
The Bulldogs competed in a tri-match with St. Thomas Aquinas and Georgian Court on Friday, Sept. 8. Bowie State fell 3-2 to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas and 3-0 to the Lions of Georgian Court. Freshman Madyson Brinson combined for 19 kills while freshman Mekenna Scott recorded 27. Brinson is the team’s top offensive player with 29 kills on the season while Scott is the team’s best setter (74) and freshman Ayana Johnson has a team-high 37 digs through six games. Additionally, freshman Nina Edwards is the team’s leading blocker with 16. Bowie State is still in search of its first win of the 2023 season.

The Dragons
VUL is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). The Dragons are also in search of its first win on the season, entering Tuesday’s match 0-3, coming off a 3-0 sweep by Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 8. As a team, VUL hit -.137 compared to JCSU’s .174. Loryn Smith and Kalaya Fitzgerald both recorded a team-high three kills, Destiny Burgess had six assists and Shannen Hill finished with 11 digs. The Dragons are led by Darius Merritt.

Looking Ahead
The Bulldogs will have another road test this weekend when Bowie State travels to Buckhannon, WV to compete in non-conference action against the University of Indianapolis and Lock Haven on Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 16, BSU will face West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State at 11;30 a.m. and 2 p.m. All matches will be played at the Rockefeller Center on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan.
