Friday’s doubleheader between Bowie State and Salem will be just the fifth and sixth meeting. Both teams are 2-2 all-time with BSU earning the season sweep in 2022 by the scores of 9-3 and 5-3 in Salem, WV.
LAST TIME OUT
BSU swept Lincoln (PA) by scores of 1-0 and 7-4 to open Northern Division play on the road Sunday. In game one, the games lone run came in the top fourth when freshman Trinity Mizelle hit a line drive to second baseman allowing sophomore Jayla Hill to score. BSU accounted for four hits as junior Akirra Pullen (7-4) took home the win in the circle, allowing two hits and seven strikeouts. Bowie State held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom fourth until LUPA added three runs to close the deficit to two. The Lady Lions tacked on a run in the bottom fifth before BSU closed out the contest with a pair of runs ignited by a single from senior Shanya Gordon and an error by Lincoln (PA) that allowed Gordon to come home.
Gordon was 1-of-2 at bat with two runs scored and an RBI while both Pullen and Smith finished with a pair of RBI. Sophomore Lindsey George (7-4) picked up the win, allowing four hits, tossing four strikeouts against 15 batters in four innings of work.
BOWIE STATE LEADERS
George leads the team in batting with a .387 average and 29 hits. Pullen leads the team in home runs with five on the year to go along with a batting average of .333, 26 RBI and 25 hits. Hill leads the Bulldogs in RBI with 27 to go along with a batting clip of .301, 25 hits and four home runs as well. In the circle, sophomore Karen Fritges has a ERA of 1.20 while Pullen and George post 3.09 and 3.80, respectively. Defensively, sophomore Brittany Brewer has 124 putouts – a team best while sophomore Kayla Evans and Sydney Edmond both have 40 and 37 assists on the season.
CIAA WEEKLY HONORS
A pair of Bulldogs, sophomore Ellianna Henneberg and freshman Trinity Mizelle, were named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Players of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Henneberg, was named the CIAA Defensive Player of the Week, her first weekly honor of the season and career. Mizelle, was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week for the first time this season. Henneberg was solid for the Bulldogs as its starting catcher, tallying 20 putouts through the four games. Henneberg was perfect in all four games including game-high 9-for-9 against WAU during game one. As for Mizelle, the Woodbridge, Va., native combined for five total hits including against three against Washington Adventist (Mar. 30) while tacking on five stolen bases. Additionally, the outfielder grabbed five putouts at the left field position.
SALEM
The Tigers are 13-20 overall, entering Friday’s twinbill on a five-game losing skid. Salem suffered a pair of losses to West Virginia Wesleyan (1-3, 2-0) to fall to 4-10 on the road this season. Sierra Chapa is the team’s leader offensively with a batting average of .375, 36 hits, 16 runs scored and 12 RBI. Andrea Gallegos has pitched the most innings for Salem with a 4-14 record and 4.45 ERA.
