Bowie State Softball Records Most Wins in Program History

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: The Bowie State Bulldogs have made program history with 28 wins on the season after sweeping the Virginia State Trojans with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap Sunday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field and Senior Day.

The record was previously set at 26 wins back in 2009 but with the today’s sweep, the Bulldogs are now at 28 victories and counting on the 2023 campaign. 

Sophomore Lindsey George (9-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Bowie State (28-11, 11-0 CIAA). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven.

In addition to her three hits, George had a home run, a walk and two RBI to lead the Bulldogs. Sophomore Kayla Evans put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Brittany Brewer also contributed for Bowie State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs first put runs on the board in the first inning. Bowie State got an RBI single from George, scoring Brewer from second base.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the third inning, when the Bulldogs put runs on the scoreboard once again. Bowie State pushed across a run on Evans’ RBI double, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.

BSU held Virginia State without a run before expanding their lead to 3-1 the following inning.

Bowie State kept the Trojans scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Bulldogs scored twice, with one run coming across on freshman Aseyah Alexander’s 2-out single, bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of Bowie State.

The Bulldogs held Virginia State without a run before building on their lead to 6-1 the following inning. Bowie State picked up a run on George’s two-out solo home run off of freshman S. Corum. The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs coasted to the win.

» Bowie State’s highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed two runs across.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Trojans at an 11-4 clip.
» Evans stole two bases in Sunday’s game.
» The Bulldogs stole five bases as a team.
» Bowie State pitchers faced 26 Virginia State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and five fly balls while striking out seven.
» George led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Bowie State will hosts in home and non-conference finale of the regular season against Frostburg State on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 2 p.m.
