Luminis Health’s hospital in Prince George’s County plans new women’s health expansion

WASHINGTON BUISNESS JOURNAL: After months of laying groundwork, Luminis Health plans to expand critical women’s health services at its Prince George’s County hospital.

The health system said it will establish a women’s health hub with a new four-story tower on its Lanham campus that would house a dedicated center for inpatient obstetrics services, labor and delivery, and postpartum care, said Deneen Richmond, president of Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center (LHDCMC).

But before putting shovels to dirt, it needs a green light from the state of Maryland. The organization filed a letter of intent earlier this month with the Maryland Health Care Commission, before it submits its certificate of need application in April, Richmond said. An approval would give LHDCMC the go-ahead to start construction. From that point, the system expects the project would take three to five years to complete.

Luminis is also now developing site improvement plans to improve traffic flow on its campus and to upgrade utility infrastructure for water, electric and wastewater systems, according to Richmond.

It’s also asking the state for $30 million in capital funding from its fiscal 2024 budget to support the project, Richmond said, noting the state’s priority of breaking down disparities in maternal mortality and the hospital’s own patient base consisting of many women of color.

Luminis is still finalizing the expected project costs, but is also “committed to making a significant investment,” Richmond said. It would be part of the health system’s $300 million fundraising campaignto renovate its existing hospital space and add new services, in addition to the women’s health hub. That work involves updating and modernizing the acute-care facility’s clinical infrastructure, surgical suites and support services.

Luminis has invested $62 million in LHDCMC since acquiring the facility in 2019.
