Men’s Basketball Ready for Three-Game Home Stand, Starting Thursday Versus Saint Augustine’s

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: The Bowie State University men’s basketball team begin its three-game home stand beginning Thursday, Jan. 5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) versus Saint Augustine’s University at 7:30 p.m.

The Series
The Bulldogs own a 12-6 all-time record against the Falcons dating back to 2009. BSU has won the last five outings, including a 58-48 victory in Raleigh, N.C. on Jan. 23, 2022.
 
Last Time Out
Senior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) scored 34 points, but the Bowie State men’s basketball team (4-11, 2-1 CIAA) fell to nationally ranked West Liberty Hilltoppers 103-78 at home Saturday inside A.C. Jordan Arena. Behind Drayton’s 34 points, the Bulldogs (4-11) also got double figure scoring from freshman Amare Wimbush (Landover, MD) tacked on 13 points off of the bench and junior Joel Webb (Forestville, MD) added nine points and six rebounds.
 
West Liberty (11-1) kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 81-51 advantage before the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Drayton’s three, to shrink the deficit to 81-58 with 9:01 to go in the contest. The Hilltoppers responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 103-78. BSU got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 42 total points.
 
The Bulldog Leaders
Mark Bradshaw (West Chester, PA) leads BSU in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game (13th in CIAA) while Drayton follows with 12.4 points (15th in CIAA), respectively. Bradshaw leads the league for 3-point field goals (33). The top rebounder for the Bulldogs is Webb who posts 4.8 rebounds per game while Anthony Carpenter (Reisterstown, MD) is right behind at 4.0 rebounds per night, respectively. Through 15 games, the Bulldogs have been outscored by its opponents by a 6.3 scoring margin as BSU averages 71.6 points per game compared to its opponents 77.9 points which is 10th and 12th in the CIAA.
 
A Look at the Falcons
SAU is 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. The Falcons enter Thursday’s game on winning momentum, defeating Elizabeth City State, 67-58 on Dec. 17.  Jaylen Richard had 21 points and five rebounds, he was 8-for-8 from the free throw line while Nemo Johnson tabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to go along with 14 points. Additionally, Chris Hill added 15 points and four rebounds in the winning effort.
 
Notably, the Falcons are 11th in scoring within the CIAA (63.8 points), last in team field goal percentage (38-percent), 11th in free throws – shooting 62-percent.
 
Upcoming Schedule
Bowie State continues its home stand with a tilt against Claflin on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 9 against Fayetteville State for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
