BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: Joshua Pryor of Bowie State was named the 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) Defensive Player of the Year as the Bulldogs tabbed a total of eight football student-athletes to the All-CIAA Football Team the league announced Friday ahead of the 2022 CIAA Football Championship game.
Joining Pryor on the First Team ballot was quarterback Dion Golatt Jr., wide receiver Keshane Hinckley, tight end Jordan Griffin and punt returner Kwincy Hall. The Bulldogs second team honorees featured offensive lineman Quinton Bobo, kick returner Hall and defensive back Raymond Boone. Additionally, Jadon Carter earned a spot on the CIAA All-Rookie Team.
Pryor led the Bulldogs defense this season in tackles (47). The Baltimore, Md., native registered 10.5 tackle for losses (52-yards), 3.5 sacks (30-yards), eight pressures, two forced fumbles and a pair of breakups this season. The redshirt senior holds the program record for career sacks and ranks second behind head coach Kyle Jackson in total career tackles.
Golatt, Jr. was the conference leader in passing yards this season, throwing for 2,649 yards on 207 pass completions and 18 touchdowns. The Largo, Md., native’s passing yards ranked 13th in the nation as he broke the school record for the most passing yards in a game (439) against Livingstone (10/1/22). Golatt, Jr. was named the CIAA quarterback of the week six times this season.
Hinckley was Golatt, Jr.’s top target this year. The Laurel, Md., native led Bowie State and the CIAA in total receptions (56). He registered a team-high (686) receiving yards (2nd in the CIAA) and a team-high (5) TDs this season. The redshirt junior ranked second in the CIAA with an average of 68.6 yards per game and 12.3 catches per outing.
Griffin shined late for the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-7 tight end appeared in all 10 games, posting his best act in the last two regular season games combining for 118-yards on six catches. His notable performance came against Lincoln (PA) where Griffin recorded four catches for 56-yards capped by a 28-yard reception TD.
Hall was a no brainer for recognition on the first team ballot for punt returns. In fact, the Washington, D.C. was also named Second Team All-CIAA for kick returns. He led the CIAA in punt returns this season with 203 yards on 13 punts. As for kick returns, Hall led the league in total yards (604) while averaging 26.3 yards per game. His best game came against Elizabeth City State (10/29/22) where he scored the game’s winning touchdown off a kickoff return (88-yards) with 52 seconds left. Hall combined for 240 return yards in total against the Vikings including three kickoffs for 139 yards and returned four punts for 101 yards. The 101 yards and 139 yards were both a single-game season-high in the CIAA.
Bobo, a veteran of the offensive line was honored for the second straight season. Bobo started every game over the last two season at the offensive guard. The White Plains, Md., native was instrumental in the Bulldogs offense that averaged 30.5 points per game (2nd in the CIAA), 18 rushing touchdowns and 18 passing TDs this season.
Boone earned Second Team All-CIAA recognition for the second-straight season. The Landover, Md., native appeared nine games tacking on 34 total tackles (4th best on team), five breakups, a pair of interceptions, 1.5 tackle for loss and a blocked kick.
Carter made an immediate impact at the defensive back position in his first season. The Bryans Road, Md., native tied for a team-best three interceptions on the season, including a 38-yard interception and TD against St. Augustine’s (9/24/22). His best game came against national ranked Virginia Union where Carter captured a team-high eight tackles.
Bowie State finished the 2022 season with a 6-4 record and 5-3 mark in league action.
