Bulldogs Fall in Four Sets to Shaw

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: Graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and seven digs but the Bowie State women’s volleyball team fell in four sets (15-25, 21-25, 25-14 and 5-25) to the visiting Lady Bears of Shaw University Monday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

The Bulldogs fell in sets one and two by the scores of 25-15 and 25-21 but in the third frame, BSU took a 5-0 lead and rode that momentum for majority of the set. The Lady Bears pulled within one on a service ace (13-12) but the Bulldogs tacked on seven unanswered points to push its lead 20-13 before taking the set 25-14 capped by a kill from graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) (25-14) to force a set four.

Shaw ballooned to a 14-2 scoring frame to start the fourth set and never looked back. The Bulldogs accounted for just one kill while hitting -.438 from the floor compared to the Lady Bears’ 10 kills and .389 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Regan Amos (Reisterstown, MD) added a team-high nine assists both freshman Nadera Avery (Temple Hills, MD) and Hoges contributed three blocks apiece.

Bowie State will travel to Lincoln (PA) on Oct. 27 for its road finale. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
