Bulldogs Add to Win Column with 3-0 Sweep of Lincoln (PA)

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: Coming off a loss last week, the Bowie State University women’s volleyball team earned a win Monday night when the visiting Lincoln (PA) Lions visited the Bulldogs for a CIAA Conference contest inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

Collectively, the Bulldogs (9-9, 5-7 CIAA) hit .210 as a team through three sets, led by junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) and graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) who chipped in 12 and nine kills, respectively. Sophomore Regan Amos (Reisterstown, MD) posted a team-leading 11 assists, followed by Grossman’s seven digs to lead the defense. Freshman Nadera Avery (Temple Hills, MD) had two of the Bulldogs three blocks.

Bowie State broke away for five-straight points to take a 12-7 lead in the opening set. The Bulldogs lead then grew 21-15 on a 9-8 scoring edge before capitalizing on three-straight miscues from the Lions that put them ahead 24-17. The set point would come from a kill from Grossman.

LUPA owned an 8-7 lead to start the second set but the Bulldogs quickly went on a 5-0 run to steal the lead 12-8 capped off by an attacking error from the Lions. Bowie State never looked back after that mini run, as the Bulldogs scored the last two points on a kill from Avery and a bad set from LUPA. The Lions had committed seven attacking errors in the set while the Bulldogs limited its opponents hitting percentage to -.043 in the frame.

With a 2-0, lead Lincoln (PA) and Bowie State played a tightly contested third frame. The Bulldogs came from behind ignited by a kill from Grossman that led to a 6-1 run and set tie at 21-all, which forced the Lions to call a timeout. Out of the break, both teams earned a kill but the Bulldogs would ice the set on a 3-1 spurt with Ivey securing her ninth kills on the night for the win.

Bowie State continues conference play with a road trip to Richmond, Va. to face the Virginia Union Panthers on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
