Bowie State Visits St. Augustine’s Saturday

BOWIE STATE ATHLETICS: BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State football team will look turn strides and get back into the winning column as the Bulldogs will continue its road skid this weekend to Raleigh, N.C. to face the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matchup is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m. at the George Williams Athletic Complex.

The Series
Saturday’s game marks the seventh meeting between the two teams. Bowie State owns a 4-2 all-time record against St. Augustine’s dating back to 2002. The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the road against the Falcons and currently have a two-game win-streak over SAU highlighted by BSU trampling the Falcons for a 54-6 win during the last meeting held on Sept. 28, 2019 in Bowie, Md.
 

Last Time Out for Bowie State
Bowie State (1-2, 0-1 CIAA) suffered its second-consecutive loss last Saturday (Sept. 17) to Shaw on the road, 17-14 at Durham County Memorial Stadium. The loss served as the first setback to a conference opponent since 2018. The Bulldogs have not lost two-straight games since 2014 and first time since 2016 to start conference play 0-1.

Graduate senior Dion Golatt, Jr. (Largo, MD) threw for 236 yards on 22 completions, a TD and an interception while redshirt sophomore Sam Doku (Silver Springs, MD) rushed for 87 yards on 22 carries and a score. Redshirt junior Morgan Scroggins (Baltimore, MD) tacked on 67 yards and five catches while graduate senior Ellison Jordan (Upper Marlboro, MD) led the defense with five tackles and a tackle for loss. Additionally, redshirt junior Raymond Boone (Landover, MD) also contributed five tackles and .5 tackle for loss.

Of the 376 yards of total offense, the Bulldogs improved its run game gathering 140 yards (season-best) and 236 yards through the air. However, in the red-zone, Bowie State finished 1-4 compared the Bears who were 3-4.

Last Timeout for Saint Augustine’s
The Falcons are 0-3 for the 2022 season. SAU tied with Virginia State in the opening quarter but that would be the last as the Trojans scored 35 unanswered points the rest of the way. The Falcons lone TD came from a 17-yard reception for Jaylen Siermons from Christopher Perkins.

Statistically, SAU finished with 323-yards of total offense that featured 176-yards passing by Perkins who was 15-of-29 in pass completions and the lone TD. Dennis Jones rushed for 44-yards on eight carries while Jordan Blake had four catches for 85-yards.Dashawn Davis and Lee Sales both recorded 12 tackles apiece as Davis tacked on a sack and 2.5 tackle for losses.

The Bulldog Leaders
Bowie State averages 17.7 points per game (4th in CIAA) after three games while their opponents post 25.7 points (8th CIAA). Golatt has completed 67 passes for 815 yards, six TDs and three interceptions, which all rank second in the CIAA. Doku leads the run game unit for Bowie State as he ranks fifth in the CIAA with 39 carries for 163 yards and two TDs.

Redshirt junior Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) continues to lead the Bulldogs receiving unit with 195 yards (4th CIAA), 16 catches (4th CIAA) and a TD. Redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) has a team-high 19 tackles (seven solo), 2.5 tackle for losses and a sack while redshirt sophomore Keith Williams (Baltimore, MD) trumped 17 tackles, two breakups and 1.5 tackle for loss.

The Polls
Bowie State fell out of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DII National rankings and the D2Football.com Top-25 list with the loss to Shaw. However, the HBCU DII Coaches Poll nodded the Bulldogs at No. 7, dropping four spots, a No. 10 ranking in the HBCU BOXTOROW Media Poll and HBCU Gameday gave Bowie State a sixth ranking in their DII HBCU Poll.

The Falcons
Amongst the CIAA, St. Augustine’s ranks 12th offensively and defensively through three games. The Falcons have scored just four touchdowns, averaging 10.0 points per game while allowing its opponents to rack up 56.0.

Perkins has 27 pass completions for two TDs and three interceptions as QB1 while Jordan has 133 reception yards, eight catches and a TD and Cameron Moore is the team’s top running back with 20 carries and 75-yards. Sales anchors the Falcons on defense with 21 tackles, an interception, and a tackle for loss. He ranks third in the league, averaging 10.5 tackles per game.

David Bowser leads SAU in his second season and is 1-10 overall at the helm of the program.
