Bowie State Softball Takes Two CIAA Individual Awards, Six Named All-Conference, Four Named All-Rookie

BOWIE, Md. – It may now be a commonplace for the Bowie State softball team to rack up the end-of-the-year softball honors in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Two of the four individual awards went to Bowie State. BSU also had a second CIAA-high six players selected to the All-CIAA Team and four named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team.
 

Graduate senior Evelyn Buehlman (Ellicott City, MD) was named the CIAA Player of the Year and All-CIAA at the utility position. Buehlman is hitting .405 this season with 15 doubles and 37 RBIs on the year. Within the CIAA, she ranks atop with 42 total hits. In the circle, Buehlman has 10 wins on the year to lead the CIAA with a fourth-best 86 strikeouts in 92 innings (4th in CIAA) pitched and an ERA of 4.95 (9th in CIAA).

Freshman Alyssa Cloutier (Derwood, MD), the right fielder, was named the CIAA Rookie of the Year. Cloutier is hitting .405 this season with 51 runs scored and nine RBIs. Cloutier leads the conference in runs scored (51) and stolen bases (36). In the outfield, Cloutier has combined for a fielding percentage of .906 with 29 putouts on 32 chances.

Each of those two made All-CIAA with Buehlman earning First Team accolades, joined by teammate and senior Shanya Gordon (Elkridge, MD) at the outfielder position. Gordon has a conference-best 43 RBIs, hits (42) to go along with 41 total putouts on a fielding percentage of .957 (8th in CIAA) as the starting centerfielder for BSU.

Accompanying Cloutier on the All-CIAA Second Team is freshman Brittany Brewer (Savage, MD), freshman Saniya Jones (Louisa, VA) and freshman Kayla Evans (Bridgeville, DE). Brewer leads the CIAA in total putouts (196) and a fielding percentage of .986 as first baseman while Jones who leads the team in total home runs (7) is fourth in the CIAA with 52 assists as the second baseman, seventh in the league in hits (34) and 10th in runs batted in with 21. Evans rounds out the second team list for Bowie State at the third base position. She has combined for 49 assists and 29 putouts on 82 chances for a fielding percentage of .951.

Additionally, all four freshman made the CIAA All-Rookie Team.

Bowie State was crowned this year’s CIAA Northern Division champions for the first time since 2017. The Bulldogs capped of the regular season with a 22-18-1 overall record, 11-5 mark in the CIAA and 8-2 record against Northern Division opponents and an eight-game winning-streak. Additionally, BSU reached 20-wins for the first time since 2017 under the leadership of second-year head coach Edward Powell
