U-Conn.’s Azzi Fudd handling NCAA spotlight with ‘sweet, smiley face’

During one of the first practices with her high school basketball team in D.C., Connecticut’s Azzi Fudd waited patiently behind the seniors, juniors and sophomores until it was her turn to complete a mile as part of fitness testing.

St. John’s Coach Jonathan Scribner was timing each player, and Fudd approached him discreetly with an inquiry.

“What’s the best time?” she asked.

Scribner, caught somewhat off-guard, paused to scroll through his records before providing the information while at the same time curious about the freshman’s intentions.

“Thanks, I’m going to beat it,” Fudd said without a moment’s hesitation.
